San Quentin Vision Plan

This San Quentin Vision Plan was created by Fisher & Hall Urban Design, with Lois Fisher as Director of Design. San Quentin State Prison, originally built in 1852, is located along the shoreline of San Francisco Bay in Marin County.  With striking views of the Bay Area, it is strategically located for future rail and ferry service.  Many of the structures on site are historically significant but because of the age of the buildings on site, maintenance is very costly.  If the State were to close the prison, the property would come under Marin County’s jurisdiction, so the County has been proactive in putting visionary policies in place if and when that occurs.  Incorporating the community’s interests, the Vision Plan envisions this world-class site a place where site and building design also be world class.   In includes compact, mixed-use, pedestrian-orientated neighborhoods and centers, world class cultural amenities, affordable housing, historic preservation, and a new ferry terminal that would link it to San Francisco.
