Fisher Town Design (FTD) is a New Urbanist design firm that is ready to help you and your community create healthy, climate friendly walkable neighborhoods and towns. We work with municipalities, agencies, non-profits and developers. FTD specializes in creating healthy communities through place-making; creating walkable places that support ‘active uses’ as an environmentally friendly alternative to car-dependent sprawl.
Key design tools are Form-Based Codes, LEED for Neighborhood Development and Crime Prevention Through Environmental design. Projects include a Form-Based Code to create a downtown for Rohnert Park (with Opticos), the CNU-CA Woodland Charrette and now Zoning update (with Lisa Wise Consulting) and a ground breaking bi-lingual Pescadero, CA Town Planning process that had 80 Spanish-only speakers in attendance.
These walkable environments reduce obesity by up to 20% and are climate-friendly, reducing greenhouse gasses by up to 40%. Lois served at the Planning Commission level for over 12 years to create a walkable town in Windsor, CA. Our projects include the ground breaking and extremely successful SmartCode for Petaluma, CA, an infill SmartCode for the reuse of former Agilent facility, Coddingtown Station which moved a planned SMART Rail Station to a more trafficked location, Quarry Village in Hayward and Artisan Village in El Dorado Hills. She currently is proposing that a plaza be created in place of a parking lot in historic Railroad Square.
Lois Fisher, president, is a graduate of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and is a LEED Accredited Professional in Neighborhood Development (LEED AP ND). She combines strong design skills with sound ecological practices to create places that belong to their site and surroundings. Fisher was a long-term Planning Commissioner for the Town of Windsor and served during the development of the downtown there. Lois Fisher also teaches Urban Design at Sonoma State University as an adjunct faculty member. She leads tours/gives lectures for leadership organizations such as the Leadership Institute and ‘Know Before You Grow’ in Petaluma. She has been a big sister with Big Brothers/Big Sisters since 2008 and was named 'Big Sister of Sonoma County' in 2014.
Awards:
Fisher Town Design received a 2018 Northern California APA Award of Merit for a Health Impact Assessment for Vallejo, CA prepared in conjunction with Sonoma State University.
Fisher Town Design was given the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce award for Planning in 2012 as part of a Redwood Empire AIA group for work on the multi-jurisdictional SMART Northwest Station relocation plan.
In 2009, Hamden, CT received the Sustainable Urbanism award from the Congress of New Urbanism, New England Chapter for the Hamden SmartCode, which was drafted by Fisher Town Design.
